AM Radio

Back before FM and talk radio, AM Radio was King….. It was everywhere … In the kitchen… In the bedroom… And especially in the car…
While the networks had their affiliates in major cities, for the most part, the stations were locally owned and operated, and quite varied in their play lists… Consequently there were some very eclectic choices… On a cross country trip, as stations came and drifted away, you were treated to a real nice slice of Music Americana… Big Band… Pop… Country… And (of course) Rock ’N Roll… At night sometimes, I could pick up a station from NYC that played some stuff called ‘Folk’…

Empty soda bottles were worth 2 cents (twice as much as your thoughts)… Local diaries and bakers delivered milk and bread to your doorstep… Doctors made house calls… Magazines appeared in your mail box… The beer you drank was brewed a few miles away by some guy named Esslinger or Ballentine… Gilligan, MaryAnn, Ginger, and the crew were groovy… And always there, like an old friend, was AM Radio…

Let’s take a ride from here to there… We’ll hear what we can hear and see what we can see… Look out for those Burma Shave signs; I love ‘em…. There’s one now…
The wolf….     Is Shaved….    So neat and trim….
Red Riding Hood….    Is chasing him….
Burma Shave….
